Sports Testing, Training, and Injury Prevention

Advanced Sports Testing

At Synergy Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine, we are very concerned with the health and safety of our young athletes.  We decided that we would bring the same type of testing that is used by major colleges and professional sports teams to the Jacksonville community.  We have chosen two companies that offer state of the art testing products, that are now available to our patients, clients, and the community.

Now more than ever we are aware of the dangers of concussions and second impact syndrome.  In the past, coaches and trainers had to make judgement calls regarding whether a player had suffered a concussion and when it was safe to return to play.  Sway has changed all that.  We have learned that balance and reaction time are greatly affected and are often the last to return when an athlete suffers a concussion.

Sway provides the first and only FDA-cleared mobile balance test. Using the built-in motion sensors of any iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch device, health professionals can administer a medical grade objective balance test in virtually any setting.

Sway’s proprietary algorithms measure reaction time in response to a user’s movement of a mobile device. The built-in motion sensors of the mobile device assist in identifying the earliest intentional movement as a response to a stimulus. Sway’s Simple Reaction Time Beta is a significant step in bringing accurate cognitive testing to a mobile device.

The Sway Web Portal allows for in-depth reporting with dynamic digital or printed reports of each patient. Healthcare professionals use Sway reports to provide feedback to patients and other providers, and to better manage outcomes.

Synergy Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine in conjunction with White Oak High School introduced this technology to their athletes.  Now they enjoy an added layer of protection for their student athletes.

Move2Perform is a movement measurement and analysis tool that identifies deficits and risk of injury. Move2Perform products have been studied with overwhelmingly positive results, published in peer reviewed literature, and adopted by the US military and professional sports teams internationally.

What Are The Benefits?

  • Provide evidence based care
  • Clear decision for return to sport/work/activity
  • Prevent sport injuries using a validated injury prediction algorithm
  • Clear documentation for medical necessity of rehabilitation
  • Decrease injury rates through pre-participation physicals, wellness, and occupational screens
  • Objective reports for you and your physician
  • Easily administered with a laptop computer and portable test kits

Return to Sport/Activity Decisions

While most patients can be returned to a pain-free status, recent evidence has clearly demonstrated that risk for future injury remains. Many return to sport/activity decisions are frequently based on opinion rather than evidence-based tests. With the Move2Perform computer application, we can now make confident, evidence based return to activity/sport and discharge decisions while managing injury risk.

Move2Perform helps us make evidence based return to sport and return to activity decisions by categorizing your injury risk and objectively tracking their progress. It’s a computer application that synthesizes results from proven and popular tests (e.g. Y Balance Test, Functional Movement Screen, Hop Testing) to calculate your  musculoskeletal status specific to the individual’s age, gender, and sport/activity. Move2Perform does this by using a proprietary algorithm based on years of published research.  It is the only system that has been validated in peer-reviewed literature allowing us to provide the best care.

Pre-Participation Testing

Whether in sports or the occupational setting, manage the sometimes overwhelming task of keeping your team healthy through meaningful and efficient pre-participation testing. Many organization have limited resources for injury prevention. Move2Perform helps identify individuals who are at risk of injury and allows you to better allocate your precious injury prevention resources to those who need them most.

Sports Training

Synergy's Sports Performance Programs

Sport specific training for the adolescent athletes

At Synergy we pride ourselves on providing our clients with services that are result oriented.  Working with numerous young athletes on a daily basis is what inspired us to create a U-18 Sports Performance Enhancement Program.  Our program is unique because it is medically based and constructed from the collaboration of a Licensed Physical Therapist and Certified Personal Trainer.

This sports oriented program is designed for all athletes, targeting their every need, whether returning to play, performance enhancement, sport specific fundamental training or speed and agility training.

Part 1: The Fitness Assessment

Each athlete will undergo a fitness assessment that is given by a Physical Therapist & Personal Trainer. Depending upon your goals and current status, you will choose the assessment that best suits your needs.  All assessments will begin with a consultation with the Physical Therapist & Personal Trainer.

Return to Play Screening & Assessment

RTP Assessment is designed for athletes with prior injuries that are transitioning from physical therapy to sport specific training. Our program will measure and identify movement asymmetries or major limitations in functional movement patterns, testing an athlete's risk for injury. RTP can help you regain your competitive edge, maximizing your athletic potential in a medically supervised environment.

Sports - Fit Assessment

The SF Assessment is intended for athletes in pursuit of optimal performance and increasing personal development. Through a combination of fitness testing, functional movement screenings, and biomechanical analysis, we will create individualized programs that work with an athlete's functional strengths and weaknesses to maximize performance and prevent injury.

Part 2: The Program

Following the initial assessment, the Physical Therapist & Personal Trainer collaborate and design your personalized program, taking into consideration any prior injuries and health concerns.

  • Enhance skill development & execution
  • Increase foot speed
  • Increase reaction speed
  • Increase functional strength
  • Increase vertical leap
  • Improve agility
  • Prevent Injury

Note:  The Sports Performance Program can be done individually or in groups from 2 to 4 participants.

Performance Enhancement Injury Risk Reduction

There are approximately 150,000 ACL injuries each year in the United States.  There has been little change in these injury rates over the past 10 years.  Female athletes participating in soccer and basketball are 2 to 8 times more likely to suffer an ACL injury compared to their male counterparts. It is also estimated that 1 in 4 of these individuals will go on to a second knee injury on their “bad” or “good” knee.

Responding to what we see as an epidemic in our area, Synergy Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine is going to be implementing a Performance Enhancement / ACL Injury Prevention Program.

The goals will be to:

  • Increase Strength and Power
  • Enhance Athleticism
  • Improve Deceleration
  • Teach Proper Landing Mechanics
  • Identify Poor Movement
  • Eliminate Muscle Imbalances
  • Reduce the Risk of Injury
